History of the Waima Topu B Trust

Waima Topu B Trust (the Trust) is an Ahuwhenua Trust formed to consolidate the land interests of Te Mahurehure whānau of Waima.

In the late 1950s the Waima Topu B block amalgamation resulted in the formation of the Waima Development Scheme.

In June 1981, the Department of Māori Affairs convened a meeting of owners at Te Mahurehure marae in Tāmaki Makaurau.  The owners agreed to resume control of their whenua. The establishment of the Waima Topu B Trust was confirmed by the Māori Land Court in June 1981. The original trustees were: Kereama Wilcox, Pat Hohepa, Hemi Toia, Dave Harding, Dave Toia, Martha Wharerau and Hamana Tawhai.

The Trust ran the farm with its own manager until the early 1990s when the farm operation was disestablished. Since then part of the whenua has been leased to local farmers and, more recently, to beekeepers. In the early 1990s approx. 100 hectares of the block was planted in pine forest. The trees have been sold and harvesting was completed in late 2017. The replanting programme will be completed by the end of 2018.

Today, the Waima Topu B Trust comprises the Waima Topu B, Puha B3A and Whakatere Manawakaiaia B34B blocks and small holdings: part Pukehaka, Wharerakau, Panirau and Kaiwhare blocks.

In a joint venture with Whakatere ki Koranui, the Trust jointly owns the land and buildings at Kaiwhare (corner of state highway 12 and Waima Valley Road).

Waima Topu B Trust also owns rental properties on trust land and there are a number of papakainga homes on the block.
